about the series

The common wildlife and succulents present in Austin, Texas inspired Ariel and her colleague Alex Waters to dive deeper into the art of scientific plant illustrations and diagrams. Upon flipping through archaic books in the UT library, they became interested in the beautiful and bizarre representations of nature they discovered. They took this interest into their own hands with intent to create new scientific plant species.

The brightly colored prints contradict the scientific studies, as if to suggest that something is not quite right. With the collected samples, Ariel and Alex created physical examples of these fictional plants using hot glue and tweezers to be displayed with the final collection of prints.

Process

Ariel and Alex collected over 40 plant samples in the Austin area, and proceeded to scan, edit, and reconstruct them in Photoshop. They used a risograph to make prints of their newly crafted plants in efforts to give the viewer textbook-like representations of these unfamiliar species.
