about the series

Inspiration for dated was sparked in the living room of Ariel’s San Francisco home — a 3-unit Edwardian style house built in the early 1900s. When Ariel first moved in (joining 13 other young folks from around the world), 64x (as they call it) was simply cluttered with outdated stuff --- from excessive velour chairs, to nonsensical knick-knacks, from model planes, fake fruit, and optical mirrors, to anything and everything else you can imagine; the only way to describe it was utter chaos. While Ariel’s first instinct was to remove it all, she quickly became inspired by its quirkiness. Dated takes on a playful approach to her vintage furniture and silly animals to bring the viewer into a not-so-modern, yet whimsical environment.

Process

To create each image, Ariel carves linoleum plates and cuts them out to allow for random, but carefully crafted compositions. She uses a technique called chine-collé to adhere brightly colored or patterned paper to the print, which provides a background color behind the printed image. Ariel continues to carve lino plates today inspired by vintage furniture and her daily interactions in her home to create never-ending possible combinations from her daily life.
